Washington D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser held a news conference alongside police chief Robert Conte on Monday where they discussed the upcoming inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden and the U.S. Capitol riot by Trump supporters last week.

Bowser was asked Monday about permits for gathering being denied or cancelled due to the violence in the capitol last week and due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Asked if all the public events regarding the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden would be cancelled, Bowser said she believed the events "should be public."

Conte said he had 56 officers "and counting," injured during the attack and said some who were Iraq veterans told him that it was scarier than combat.

He also was asked about possible further violence from pro-Trump demonstrators, which Conte said they were monitoring the situation, but haven't seen any further violence in D.C. neighbourhoods.
