Opposition members of parliament used question period on Wednesday to grill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about a 2018 allegation against former chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance.

Trudeau said on Tuesday that no one in his office knew the allegation made against Vance was a “Me Too complaint” despite documents reported on by Global News that show on the same day his office asked bureaucrats to open a probe, bureaucrats were informed the allegation was about “sexual harassment” and were referring to it as such in emails.

On Wednesday, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole and other members of his party questioned whether Trudeau was telling the truth about his remarks Tuesday and whether he would fire his chief of staff, Katie Telford.

Last week, a former senior advisor to the prime minister, Elder Marquez, testified that he was asked to look into a 2018 allegation against Vance by either Telford or her assistant.

“He either isn’t being straight with Canadians, Mr. Speaker, or his chief of staff chose to cover it up and keep him in the dark,” O’Toole said Wednesday during question period.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also questioned Trudeau about the allegation, speaking about the “chilling” effect inaction would have “on women across this country.”
