Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday that the federal government has reached an agreement with chemical manufacturer Umicore to build a new battery facility in Loyalist township in Odessa, near Kingston, Ont.

The plant, which will supply materials for a million electric vehicles a year, will also provide 1,000 jobs during construction and hundreds of long-term good positions once it’s up and running.

Trudeau was joined by Ontario's Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli and Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne to make the announcement at Queen's University.

The prime minister was asked about the Bank of Canada’s decision to hike interest rates to 2.5 per cent, and reiterated the steps his government has taken to tackle the rising cost of living.

Trudeau also defended his government’s decision to allow Germany to return sanctioned natural gas turbines to Russia’s Gazprom after being grounded in Montreal amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He said sanctions are aimed at Putin and not at Canada’s allies.
