Toronto Mayor John Tory said on Monday that thousands of people signed up for COVID-19 vaccines on the day eligibility opened to all adults in virus hot spots in Ontario.

"40,144 people booked their vaccine appointment between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. today," he stated.

This week and next, the province will send half of its vaccine supply to the hot spots, based on recommendations from the government’s scientific advisers. Eligibility expands further across Ontario on Thursday, when online bookings open up to all residents aged 50 and over, Tory said.

Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa also said an investigation is underway into a COVID-19 outbreak at a hotel where travellers arriving in Canada by plane are expected to quarantine.

“We’re working with the facility to identify those who are impacted,” she said.

Ontario reported 3,436 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the provincial total to 473,901. The death toll in the province rose to 8,118 as 16 more deaths were recorded.
