The mayor of a Slovenian town hit by flooding said it was clear early on Friday it would not be "a typical flood event."

Rescuers struggled to reach flooded areas following torrential rains in areas in northern and western Slovenia and issued a public call for rubber boats in places where roads were closed and impassable due to landslides. No deaths have been reported.

Nejc Smole, the mayor of the town Medvode, said authorities were working intensely to reach people still in need of evacuation in nearby towns and villages.

Slovenia's Environment Agency has issued a red warning for large-scale flooding. Meteorologists say the heavy rains, which are expected to spread to neighbouring Croatia and Bosnia further to the south, will last for the next 24 hours at least.
