At least two died and two are missing following a torrential downpour on Monday that flooded Spain’s central regions and capital city, Madrid.

The floods have forced the closure of roads, subway lines and high-speed train connections across the regions, police said. Metro riders even captured footage of water seeping into subway cars as they were riding.

In the Madrid region alone, emergency services responded to almost 1,200 incidents overnight, authorities confirmed.

Prior to the mass rainfall, Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, issued a maximum red alert on Sunday.
