At least 12 people have been killed and another five have been reported missing following floods trigged by heavy monsoon rains across Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Twenty of the island nation's 25 districts were hit by flash floods, with some even seeing mudslides. As a result, many regions have been placed on major flood alerts.

More than 5,000 Sri Lankans have been displaced to evacuation centers as homes are being swept. Additionally, the majority of the country’s schools were closed on Monday.

Navy and army troops have been deployed to rescue victims and provide food and other essentials to those affected, according to Sri Lankan officials.
