China's financial hub of Shanghai was taking baby steps towards easing COVID-19 curbs with residents having mixed reactions on Monday.

Authorities said a negative COVID-19 test would no longer be required to take public transport and visit parks. "I was pretty happy at the beginning. Later on, I felt a little bit worried because you still have to protect yourself," said Shang E, a 27-year-old resident.

Meanwhile, residents in China’s capital Beijing also expressed mixed opinions toward the easing of the world’s toughest COVID-19 restrictions, as a patchwork of easing measures sowed confusion across the country hoping for more clarity on specific policies.

Resident Wu Zhiqiang said the policy changes felt random for him, and “out of my expectations.”

China’s authorities have been shifting their tone on the dangers posed by COVID in the wake of last month's unprecedented protests.

Although the protests largely petered out amid a heavy police presence across major cities, in their wake numerous regional authorities have announced some relaxations of lockdowns, quarantine rules and testing requirements.
