Protests by residents in several Chinese cities against COVID-19 lockdown and quarantine measures continued this week, with people seen in Guangzhou and Shanghai clashing with riot police and COVID workers.
In video posted to social media, protesters could be seen toppling a COVID-19 testing tent, and pushing back against police and workers, while officers in hazmat suits could be seen marching through the streets in other video.
Beijing residents voiced support for the protests on Wednesday, with some calling it "inspiring."
"Just identify the close contacts and quarantine them," one man, who would not provide his name to reporters, said. "There is no need to quarantine the whole building or the whole neighbourhood. Not everyone is a close-contact."
The protests on the mainland were triggered last week by a fire in China's Xinjiang region that left 10 people dead after they were trapped in their apartments. Protesters said lockdowns were partly to blame, though officials have denied the claims. The strict policy aimed at stamping out COVID-19 with lockdowns and quarantines, however, has become a lightning rod for frustrations.
