COVID-19: Some Shanghai residents go shopping for the first time in over 50 days

More Shanghai, China residents were given the freedom to go out to shop for groceries for the first time in nearly two months on Thursday, as authorities set out more concrete plans for exiting the city-wide COVID-19 lockdown.

Some housing compounds in the central Changning district had distributed passes on Thursday for residents to enter a Carrefour supermarket that had just reopened. The passes were for one person from each household to go to the shop for 40 minutes and spend up to 500 yuan (US$74). Residents were advised to walk or ride a bicycle to the shop and told to queue at the entrance two metres apart.

"It's good and my mood feels very happy. The lifting of the lockdown is starting. It's good news for us," shopper Zhong Renqiu said. "We've mainly relied on government provisions and things obtained through group-buying."

The commercial hub of 25 million recorded no new infections outside quarantined areas for a fifth day in a row, further cementing its "zero-COVID" status with each day, but reported 637 new local asymptomatic and 82 symptomatic coronavirus cases for May 18, the city's government said in a statement.
