With the dust barely settled on the recent Summer Games, the next Olympiad is fast approaching as the opening ceremonies for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are 100 days out.

Preparations are anything but simple as China readies to host thousands of athletes and personnel as it battles flare-ups of COVID-19.

China has reported nearly 250 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current outbreak 10 days ago, with many infections in remote towns along porous international borders in the country's northwest. Fifty new local cases were reported on Tuesday, the highest daily count since September 16.

Beijing residents were confident in the Winter Olympics occurring, which will be the first city to stage both the Summer and Winter Games.

But the 2022 event has been shadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as calls from human rights groups for a boycott over China's treatment of Tibet, Uyghur Muslims and Hong Kong.
