Residents of Beijing went through a subdued May Day holiday on May 2, after the city of 22 million conducted mass testing in most of its 16 districts over the past week, suspended all entertainment venues and banned restaurant dining.

Beijing’s authorities have tightened COVID-19 restrictions, but not locked down, over the five-day Labour Day holiday that runs through Wednesday. Instead, they have relied on mass-testing to locate and isolate infections for the time-being.

"I did not have any close contact with infected people, but the area I had been in was considered to be high-risk at that time so I quarantined at home. At the beginning it was alright, but after a while I really couldn't bear it. I wanted to go out," said a 24-year-old painter named Jin, who only provided one name.

The capital city reported 36 new symptomatic COVID-19 cases for May 1, down from 53 cases a day earlier, according to the Xinhua news agency.
