Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) CEO and president Mike Nader provided an update on Thursday afternoon following the injuring of a Seven Oaks General Hospital worker, who is in serious condition, after she was stabbed at the facility.
Nader said the staff member who was injured in Wednesday's assault is out of surgery and is in "critical and stable" condition. He added that the hospital is open again for visitation.
Winnipeg police said on Thursday that in addition to the hospital worker in serious condition, two people are dead. Police say all three crimes are likely related.
Police in Winnipeg got involved Wednesday afternoon when RCMP called about a homicide in New Bothwell, Man. where a 73-year-old woman had been found dead in a home less than an hour earlier. Winnipeg police say officers were heading to the area of Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street around 2:30 p.m., where they believed they would find the suspect, when they were rerouted to the report of an assault at Seven Oaks General Hospital.
Spokesperson Const. Dani McKinnon said a man in his 30s was taken into custody.
Later that evening, police headed to 310 Toronto St. and found a man in his 70s, dead. They believe he was killed.
Winnipeg police and RCMP say they believe the same suspect is responsible for the the homicides and the assault at the hospital, but wouldn’t discuss a possible motive.
All the victims and the suspect were known to each other, McKinnon said, but did not elaborate.
