Halton Regional Police Chief Stephen Tanner said on Thursday that one of the victims critically injured in Milton from a shootings rampage across the Toronto-area was an international exchange student and is unlikely to survive. He added that the gun used in the shootings was now in possession of the Special Investigations Unit and that Sean Petrie, the man believed responsible, was not a legal gun owner.
Tanner was among several law enforcement officials who provided an update on Monday's shooting rampage that left two men dead, including a Toronto officer.
Alongside Tanner and Peel Regional Police chief Nishan Duraiappahwill be Bonnie Crombie, the Mississauga mayor.
On Monday, two men were killed in a shooting rampage that prompted police to issue a provincewide emergency alert regarding an active shooter. The first shooting took place at a Tim Hortons where 48-year-old Const. Andrew Hong was attending a joint training exercise in Mississauga.
Const. Hong, a Toronto police officer for 22 years and a father of two, was eating his lunch when he was fatally shot in what police have described as an "ambush" style attack. Another person was also injured.
Roughly an hour later, another shooting took place in Milton, where three people were shot in an autobody shop.
The suspected killer, identified as 40-year-old Sean Petrie, was shot and killed by Hamilton Police officers late Monday afternoon at a cemetery in the city.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said Thursday that Petrie had an extensive criminal history and had been placed on a national flagging system in 2007 for an offence in 2005 as a risk to reoffend.
Peel Regional Police Det. Michael Mavity said Hong may have been targeted for being in uniform after being shot dead in Mississauga on Monday. He also said it is believed Petrie attempted to disarm Hong.
