The United Nations (UN) held a special session on gross human rights violations in Ukraine as it marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s "special military operation."

Political leaders, including Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, addressed the UN ahead of a panel of survivors and human rights advocates who spoke about the situation on the ground in Ukraine and at Russian “filtration camps.”

Joly told the UN “there’s no option but victory” for Ukraine and said Canada would offer its support “for as long as it takes.”

Meanwhile, a former Ukrainian prisoner of war, Artem Dyblenko, was one of a number of surviors to speak, recalling his experience at a Russian camp.

“I was in Russian captivity (for) 135 days. This is about 3,000 hours. Three-thousand hours of physical, moral, psychological abuse; 3,000 hours of Russian hell,” he said.

The UN General Assembly will meet later Wednesday to discuss the situation in Ukraine ahead of a upcoming vote on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion on Thursday.
