Hungary’s Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó called for United Nations to back peace talks between Russia and the United State, as he addressed a special session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday

Szijjártó said the delivery of weapons and sanctions levied by the West has not “saved lives.”

UN member states have gathered to discuss Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine as the conflict nears the one-year mark. States will gather again later Thursday to vote on a resolution condemning Russia’s war.

On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced Russia, saying the attack on Ukraine “challenges the cornerstone principles and values of our multilateral system.”

“Meanwhile, we have heard implicit threats to use nuclear weapons. The so-called tactical use of nuclear weapons is utterly unacceptable,” he said.

Thursday’s upcoming vote follows two similar votes the General Assembly passed, though not unanimously.
