Russia's proposal for a Christmas ceasefire - similar to the iconic Christmas Truce during WWI in 1914 - appears to have collapsed, with both sides accusing the other of violating the proposed ceasefire.

The Russian defence ministry on Friday accused the Ukrainian armed forces of shelling Russian positions in Ukraine despite Moscow's declaration of a unilateral Christmas ceasefire.

Defence Ministry Spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said Ukrainian positions responsible for the attacks had been "suppressed by return fire" from Russian forces.

Artillery fire could be heard on the frontline near Kreminna in eastern Ukraine on Friday even after the official start of a unilateral ceasefire declared by Moscow and rejected by Kyiv.

"Nothing has changed since midday, the shelling continues. They wanted some quiet and tried to mislead us hoping we would believe it. They have been lying all the time since 2014 saying 'ceasefire, ceasefire' while shelling us," said a Ukrainian serviceman named "Psykho."

Meanwhile, Lviv residents celebrating Orthodox Christmas rushed to bomb shelters as an air raid alarm blared across the whole of Ukraine on Friday. Some residents celebrating Christmas on Friday were together with their children in anticipation of festive plays and performances.
