International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said Friday that, in general, radiation at the defunct Chornobyl nuclear power plant is “quite normal,” following a trip to Ukraine where he met with senior Ukrainian officials and delivered urgent technical assistance.

Grossi said there were relatively higher levels of “localized radiation” resulting from the movement of heavy vehicles during Russia’s occupation of the plant.

Ukraine’s state nuclear company said Thursday that Russian forces occupying Chornobyl had left the plant, suggesting radiation concerns had driven them away.

Grossi said his team had received reports of “some personnel being contaminated” but said that had not been confirmed.

He said Russian troop withdrawal was “undoubtedly a step in the right direction.”
