Opioid-related deaths in Ontario’s shelters surged during the pandemic, according to a recent study that examined data from the coroner’s office and other sources.
The study conducted by researchers from the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network and Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital and Public Heath Ontario found there were 210 accidental opioid deaths in shelters between January 2018 and May 2022.
There were 48 deaths before the pandemic took hold and 162 recorded after, the study found.
As Katherine Ward reports, researchers and advocates are calling for better supports to save more lives.
