A severe thunderstorm that swept through parts of southern Ontario on Saturday caused power outages in multiple cities, brought down tree branches, inundated people with heavy rain and left at least seven people dead, according to law enforcement.

In places like Peterborough and Orleans, Ont., people witnessed torrential rain, with some posting videos to social media saying at some points they could not see outside their windows.

And in the Toronto area, one family posted video of their drive on Highway 401, calling it “one of the scariest things” to happen, saying that debris at one point was blowing through the air. During the video, people in the car remark how it was difficult to see.
