Thousands of people are without power and numerous crashes have been reported in parts of southern Ontario as the province is hit by a large winter storm.

As of shortly before 1p.m., Hydro One’s outage map showed localized outages throughout the region, with areas north of Peterborough and surrounding the Ottawa area seeing thousands without power.

Some areas west and south of Toronto also had numerous outages, the map showed.

Hydro Ottawa said at 10:30 a.m. that since the start of the storm, it has restored power to 61,000 customers while around 25,000 remained without power.

Meanwhile, we look at how the situation is unfolding at Pearson International Airport in Toronto - time to cancel those travel plans?

And when can we expect the snow to let up? As always Global News Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell has the answer.
