Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott announced Monday that the province was setting up new 911 models of care to cover 33 municipalities that she described would provide other options for paramedics for treatment of patients as opposed to immediately bringing patients to hospital emergency departments.
According to the government, current policy requires 911 patients be brought to hospital but the new model, eligible palliative care patients and those experiencing mental health and addictions challenges could receive help from the paramedic directly or in the community where appropriate. The announcement comes as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to strain Ontario hospitals.
Elliott also confirmed the province had made a request to the federal government for assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces or the Red Cross due to increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units, adding they were waiting to hear back for a response. Asked why the request wasn't made earlier, Elliott said it was an additional way to get more assistance.
