Northwest Territories wildfires: Evacuees from Yellowknife arrive in Calgary

Despite flight delays from the Northwest Territories following an evacuation order on Wednesday, the first wave of families impacted by the devastating wildfires around Yellowknife arrived in Calgary, Alberta.

At least four commercial flights with people evacuating from the fire-ravaged territory were scheduled to arrive at the Calgary Airport on Thursday.

“To see everything from my childhood, from where I was born, from where I grew up… everything burning to ash… it’s devastating,” said a Yellowknife resident who flew directly from Montreal — where she was vacationing as the wildfires began.

Both WestJet and Air Canada have added flights and increased capacity to existing journeys to help the evacuation process. Global’s Sarah Offin has the latest.
