Niger coup: Protesters rally in streets against sanctions as support grows for junta

Supporters of Niger's junta marched in the capital Niamey on Thursday to protest sanctions and demand the departure of French troops, which are stationed in Niger to help it fight an Islamist insurgency.

Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani, the former head of Niger's presidential guard who shut President Mohamed Bazoum in his residence and declared himself head of state, vowed not to bow to pressure in a speech on state television on Wednesday night.

As of Wednesday, the newly, self-declared leader of Niger is on a transitional path to democratic elections — one week after he ousted democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), whose defence chiefs were meeting in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, has unleashed sanctions and said it could authorize the use of force if soldiers did not restore Bazoum to power by Sunday.
