Seven weeks after overthrowing the country’s government, Niger’s military junta has accused France of taking steps towards a potential military intervention.

After implying France and Niger were in talks to agree on a “French withdrawal plan” at the beginning of the month, junta member Col.-Maj. Amadou Abdramane said, “France has continued to deploy its forces in several ECOWAS countries.”

He suggested the forces come “as part of the preparations for an aggression against Niger that it is planning in collaboration with this community organization.”

Since dubbing the July 26 military revolt illegitimate, France’s relations with Niger have become increasingly turbulent, with thousands of Nigerien residents backing the military junta and protesting for France to cut ties with the nation.
