ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, has lifted sanctions against Niger after a military coup threatened to fragment the country. However, the regional bloc has set preconditions for dialogue and engagement with other states. The coup took place earlier this month, leading to the ousting of President Mahamadou Issoufou. ECOWAS had imposed sanctions on Niger, including closing borders and suspending trade, in response to the coup. The lifting of sanctions is a positive step towards resolving the crisis, but the situation remains fragile.
