Two weeks after Niger's democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by his presidential guard, residents of the capital Niamey hope their new military leaders can usher in an era of stability and abundance the previous regime couldn't achieve.

This comes as the military junta that seized power in Niger has named new ministers and barred most international mediators from the country, in what analysts described as an attempt to consolidate power in the face of international pressure.

"As I look around the country, I can see that people are really united now, and we're very happy that these soldiers have come to power," Niamey resident Sidiki Diarra said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is greatly worried about the safety of Niger's ousted president, the State Department said Wednesday. Bazoum's party said he and his family were being detained under "cruel" and "inhumane" conditions.
