The military regime that took over Niger following a coup last month is now saying it will prosecute the country’s official president.

President Mohamed Bazoum — whom the military junta ousted and kidnapped at the beginning of their coup — is purportedly set to be indicted for high treason, following exchanges with foreign heads of state and international organizations.

Regional, continental and federal organizations have called for Bazoum’s release since last month and his return to power as leader, however, some Nigeriens have mixed feelings on the matter.

No trial date has been set for Bazoum, but the death penalty is punishment for committing high treason in Niger. Global’s Kyle Benning has the latest.
