NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced Tuesday that the alliance aims to cut its military and civilian greenhouse gas emissions by at least 45 per cent by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050. It was the first emissions target announced for the organization.
"It will not be easy, but it can be done," Stoltenberg said ahead of the leaders' summit in Madrid.
He also said that leaders would endorse a "new strategic concept" on addressing climate change and state it as a "defining challenge of our time." This would include the release of a NATO assessment on how climate change "affects our security."
He addressed the challenges of issues such as inflation, energy prices and the potential of a food scarcity problem and said they were related to the war in Ukraine. He added that the "reason for the consequences" and responsibility for the impact on global energy and food markets can be attributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Stoltenberg also said that if Putin would withdraw and end the war in Ukraine, it would be "the easiest way to end all these problems."
