As the NATO summit got underway on Wednesday in Madrid, Spain, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the military alliance needs to be “clear-eyed” about the potential threat posed by China. However, he clarified that China is “not our adversary.”

Stoltenberg detailed how China has been building up its military forces and investing heavily in critical infrastructure in NATO-allied countries, as well as spreading “Russian lies and disinformation.”

He said NATO would step up cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners to guard against the “serious challenges” posed by China.

Stoltenberg also said that NATO has approved an enhanced package of support for Ukraine to help strengthen the country in the long term, adding that the alliance would also step up “practical support” for other partners in eastern Europe like Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the face of increased Russian aggression.
