Stoltenberg says positive decision on Sweden joining NATO “possible” by next week | FULL

After convening a meeting between Swedish and Turkish officials, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that a positive decision on the Nordic country’s bid to join NATO was “possible” by next week.

Stoltenberg said he believed that Turkey’s objections could be met ahead of the two-day summit in Lithuania on July 11-12.

Stoltenberg added that he would convene another meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Monday.

The NATO head said that all sides have agreed that the ratification of Sweden’s membership should happen “as soon as possible.”

NATO requires the unanimous approval of all 31 members for Sweden to join the alliance.
