Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly showed support for Sweden joining NATO during a joint news availability on Thursday with the country's Foreign Affairs Minister Ann Linde.

Asked if Canada would back Sweden, Joly affirmed Canada’s support if membership was requested, given what she called the shared values, common status of Arctic nations and history of cooperation between the two countries.

She also said that “Canada would be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sweden,” in line with Canada's belief in the “open-door policy” of NATO.

The press conference came immediately after an "armchair discussion" between the two ministers on a "feminist approach to global challenges."

Their meeting follows comments from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that Finland and Sweden would be able to join the military alliance quickly should they ask for membership.
