Well into the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Global News visited two east Toronto hospitals to find out how frontline healthcare workers are keeping up with the demand and caring for COVID-19 patients.

The area has been hit especially hard and hospitals are beyond capacity. The physical and emotional toll for frontline healthcare workers has been demanding.

“We’ve lost too many” said Dr. Martin Betts when asked about patients they’ve lost. “For all of us, any patient that passes away with COVID is tragic. At our last count we’ve had a little over 320 patients come to our ICU with COVID and we had a little over 75 that passed away.”

Caryn Lieberman reports on the various steps health officials are taking in order to help save lives and protect themselves.
