Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses will arrive in the country before the end of the year. The roll-out is happening sooner than expected and means thousands of Canadians will be protected from COVID-19 in early 2021. Mike Le Couteur reports.
It was vaccine day in British Columbia on Tuesday. A frontline healthcare worker was the first to get vaccinated. They and those who work in long-term care homes are the first who will be receiving the vaccine in the province. Residents in those centres will have to wait. Robin Gill explains the province’s vaccine delivery.
Alberta is also vaccinating frontline health-care workers first, with priority to those working in intensive care. Alberta has the most active cases per capita of any Canadian province and patients are flooding into intensive care units. More beds have been added but hospitals are struggling to cope. As Heather Yourex-West explains, staff are already exhausted and expect the case count to keep rising.
After weeks of rising cases and hospitalizations in Quebec, the premier has announced harsh new measures to get the coronavirus under control. Among the new restrictions, starting Christmas Day, all non-essential businesses will be closed until Jan. 11. Mike Armstrong has more details on these restrictions.
A Canadian who built an international fashion brand named after himself is in custody tonight. Peter Nygard was arrested in his hometown last night following a U.S. extradition request. He’s been indicted in the Southern District of New York on multiple charges of sex trafficking minors, racketeering and other offences. More than 50 women have accused Nygard of sexual assault, claims that date back all the way to the 1970s. His own sons say they too are among his victims. Joe Scarpelli reports.
There is really no excuse anymore for sports teams to keep using names and logos that are offensive. Times have changed and while concerns have been raised before, teams are starting to act on it. Today, Cleveland’s major baseball team got with the program. Eric Sorensen reports.
