In our top story: Canada and the U.S. have begun their roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech, with the first doses given to people in both countries on Monday. The plan is to administer doses for the general public sometime in 2021. For now, the supplies are limited, with doses reserved for people considered the highest priority. Eric Sorensen begins tonight’s coverage with a closer look at how that process is unfolding in Ontario.
Quebec also saw its first day of vaccinations, but instead of beginning with health care workers, the province started with residents in long-term care homes. There have been concerns around the vaccine’s strict handling requirements, due to a requirement to stay at extremely cold temperatures. But now that that concern has been overcome, health officials hope protecting the most vulnerable will get the pandemic under control. Mike Armstrong reports.
Federal and provincial governments are moving as fast as they can to scale up COVID-19 vaccination programs. As David Akin reports, that will involve everything from shipping specialized freezers around the country to ramping up a communications program to convince Canadians to take the vaccine when it’s safe.
Alberta desperately needs those vaccine doses after another record-breaking day of COVID-19. More than 1,800 people were infected with COVID-19 in 24 hours. Fifteen more people also died in the province. Heather Yourex-West reports on how the province is responding and when they expect to get their doses of the vaccine.
It was a pivotal moment in the U.S. today as the first vaccines were given. With the prick of a needle, the worst hit country in the world was given a dose of hope. An intensive care nurse in New York was among the first to get the vaccine. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls it “the weapon that will end the war.” More than 300,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 in the country and as Jackson Proskow reports, while vaccines won’t stop the deaths immediately, Monday marks the beginning of the end of this pandemic.
