Workers at intensive care units (ICU) in France's hospitals are worried of a flare-up of the country's COVID-19 situation, which could again saturate patient numbers and increase pressure on health workers, one French doctor said.

The La Timone Hospital in Marseille has increased in ICU capacity from the normal 10 to 16 beds since September.

Dr. Julien Carvelli said that even though the situation in the COVID-19 ward remains stable for now, a significant increase in patient numbers would be unbearable.

"We have no leeway," Carvelli said. "If a lot of patients have to be admitted in intensive care in the coming days, we will quickly exceed our limit."

French health authorities reported 4,317 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in France on Monday, down from 19,715 on Sunday and 4,347 on Feb. 1. The number of people in hospital with the virus went up by 343, to 28,037.
