Israel set the pace on COVID-19 vaccinations earlier this year; quickly administering doses to most of its adults. But the small nation is now seeing a worrying fourth wave, highlighting concerns about the long-term effectiveness of the shots against variants of the virus.
Around half of the country's 600 patients presently hospitalized with severe illness have received two doses of the Pfizer Inc shot, a rare occurrence out of 5.4 million fully-vaccinated people. The majority of these patients received two doses at least five months ago, are over the age of 60 and also have chronic illnesses known to exacerbate a coronavirus infection, according to Reuters interviews. But such "breakthrough" cases still have prompted highly vaccinated countries to question whether booster doses should be given and to whom.
Israel is rolling-out third booster shots to tackle the infection rate, with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett getting his on Friday. Redmond Shannon reports on the discussions being had and what's next in the ongoing vaccine effort.
