Spanish farmers blocked a highway at the border of France and Spain on Monday, between Irun and Hendaye in the Basque Country, days before the bloc's residents vote in the European Parliament elections.

Dozens of farmers drove their tractors into the A63 highway and congested the border point, a follow-up on similar European Union (EU)-wide protests earlier this year, against what farmers say are unfair EU farming laws and unfair competition.

The 27-nation EU has already weakened some parts of its flagship Green Deal environmental policies, removing a goal to cut farming emissions from its 2040 climate road map.

The European election kicks off on June 6, with most of the bloc's countries casting their ballots on June 9.
