The French government on Wednesday sent armoured vehicles to protect a wholesale food market in Paris and blocked the highway into the city, in a sign of escalating tensions as farmer protests in France and Belgium as the movement heats up elsewhere in Europe.
Meanwhile, Belgian farmers said that hundreds of tractors would descend on Brussels on Thursday as EU leaders meet in the city for a summit.
Farmers are angry over EU regulations they say are killing off their businesses by making them uncompetitive.
