The head of France’s largest farming organization said Monday farmers would block all major highways out of Paris as protests against price pressures, taxes and the European Union’s (EU) nature restoration law intensify.

“In any case, we’re escalating. We’re here today, we’re leaving the highway for the first time in almost eight days, we’re taking the RN 31 and this evening, we’ve decided to come back here,” said Regis Desrumaux, the head of the FDSEA farmers union for the OISE region.

France has said it will push to ease EU environmental regulations on fallow farmland this week but farmers say they remain unhappy with the government’s response. On Friday, the French government also dropped plans to gradually reduce state subsidies on agricultural diesel.

Meanwhile, the protests spread to southern Belgium as farmers blocked one of Europe’s busiest highways and parked tractors a stone throw from the EU Parliament. Protesters said it was a taste of the protests planned for the EU Leaders’ Summit on Thursday.
