Hundreds of tractors converged on the Spanish capital of Madrid on Wednesday, as farmers staged a massive protest in the capital to demand fairer prices and less red tape.

Police said 500 tractors were allowed into Madrid but said more than 100 were turned away.

As protesters gathered in Spain’s central Independence Square, clashes broke out between police and demonstrators.

“We want fair prices, we are selling at a loss,” said Carlos, a farmer who joined the protest.

“We ask that we don’t get products from outside, from third countries that don’t belong to the European Economic Community and don’t have the safety measures we have in Europe.”

Farmers have been protesting for weeks in cities across Europe, most recently in Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic.
