European Union leaders met on Monday in Brussels, Belgium to discuss a sixth package of sanctions on Russia, including a ban on Russian oil imports.

However, leaders were not all in agreement over the proposed sanctions.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was "not there yet" with regard to the package, expressing low expectations the disagreements will be solved within the summit.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Obran said his country needs guarantees and alternatives if it was to implement sanctions on Russian oil imports, adding solutions must be found before imposing the sanctions.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he expected the EU to reach a consensus on an oil embargo against Russia “sooner or later.”
