U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken chaired a United Nations meeting on Wednesday, where he discussed the global food insecurity amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken highlighted this food insecurity crisis facing the world, saying the number of people living in acute food insecurity has skyrocketed from 108 million to 160 million between 2016 and 2021.

The secretary of state said the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate change crisis and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have contributed to this situation.

He called on countries with significant grain, fertilizer reserves and financial resources to step up fast to address global food insecurity.

Blinken also announced $215 million in funding by the U.S. in emergency food assistance for countries in need.

United Nations secretary-general António Guterres addressed the meeting, calling on Russia to allow secure export of grain stored at Ukrainian ports.

He also said Russian food and fertilizers must have unrestricted access to global markets.
