Merck announced on Monday that it would begin manufacturing its antiviral pill molnupiravir to fight COVID-19, at the Thermo Fisher Scientific plant in Whitby, Ont.

Merck Canada president and managing director Marwan Akar says the Whitby, Ont., plant will be part of a network of three plants that will manufacture molnupiravir to supply “upper and middle income countries.”

The announcement comes days after the federal government announced It had signed a purchase agreement with Merck for up to 500,000 courses of their oral COVID-19 treatment, with an option to add another 500,000 more pending approval from Health Canada.

Tassi made the announcement during a briefing alongside Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam.
