Experts say Paxlovid, a drug for high-risk COVID-19 patients, is the key to preventing hospitals from becoming overwhelmed in future waves of the pandemic.

The antiviral treatment has shown a 90 per cent reduction in hospitalizations among unvaccinated patients with the Delta variant who received the drug within five days of symptom onset.

But as Jamie Mauracher reports, even with COVID-19 infections surging across Canada, experts say the patchwork distribution system for the drug in parts of the country may prevent those who need the drug from getting it in time.
