The world’s first antiviral pill for treating COVID-19 has been approved in the United Kingdom. Merck says Molnupiravir reduces COVID-19 symptoms and speeds up recovery.

The drug, to be branded Lagevrio in Britain, is designed to introduce errors into the genetic code of the virus that causes COVID-19 and is taken twice a day for five days.

The speedy approval in Britain comes as the government struggles to tame soaring infections.

Infectious diseases physician Dr. Andrew Morris spoke with Global News about the pill, and how it works.
