Public Services and Procurement Minister Filomena Tassi announced Friday that pending Health Canada authorization, Canada has signed agreements to purchase one million doses of the Pfizer oral antiviral pill and 500,000 courses of the Merck antiviral pill to fight COVID-19, with the option to secure up to 500,000 more.

Tassi made the announcement during a briefing alongside Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam.

The ministers also addressed the recent guidance from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) strongly recommending that those 50 and older get a COVID-19 booster shot.

The committee also said the mRNA booster shot could be offered to adults age 18 to 49 at least six months after their second dose.

Duclos said advice from NACI on the issue of booster shots was important because international opinions “have evolved” and because of the differences in how provinces and territories are “moving or not moving on the boosters,” which he said could cause confusion on the topic.
