A new real-world study released this week found two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine provides 70 per cent protection against hospitalization by the Omicron variant.

The study by Discovery Health was based on more than 211,000 positive COVID-19 test results, with about 78,000 of those results from Nov. 15 to Dec. 7 attributed to Omicron. The 78,000 results are not confirmed Omicron cases, meaning the study cannot offer conclusive findings about the variant, but officials with Discovery say the vaccine still shows it holds at 70 per cent in the Omicron wave against severe complications.

They caution, however, that it still shows there may be weaker efficacy among those with only two doses of the vaccine as in the prior periods of September to October when Delta was the dominant variant, about 93 per cent of their fully vaccinated Pfizer clients were less likely to be admitted to hospital, whereas now it's at 70 per cent.
