Passengers at London's international gate to Paris and Brussels rushed to secure tickets to leave the city on Sunday as several European countries placed new restrictions on travel to and from the United Kingdom due to concerns over a new strain of the coronavirus that is spreading rapidly there.

Belgium said it would close its borders to trains and planes coming from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands also suspended flights. Italy said it was planning a similar ban.

Outgoing travellers queued up at the Eurostar terminal at London's international gate to Paris and Brussels to catch the last trains leaving before a midnight deadline ban posed by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo for incoming travel from Britain.

Shoppers also filled London’s Oxford Street on Saturday as well.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new measures for London and other parts of England on Saturday night. The U.K. government tightened its COVID-19 restrictions for London and nearby areas and disrupted the Christmas holiday plans of millions of people.
