London, parts of Essex, and Hertfordshire will join northern England in Tier 3 lockdown on Wednesday, says Health Secretary Matt Hancock. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

Restaurants and pubs will close and be limited to selling only takeaways and deliveries - according to the Tier 3 rules.

Hancock also announced a new variant of coronavirus emerging in the community - suggesting it may be the reason behind the infection spikes in these areas.

Today, there were 20,263 daily Covid cases, and 232 daily recorded deaths across the UK.
